How to Replace a Fuel Injection Pump
Abstract
If your fuel pump is not delivering enough fuel pressure to meet specifications or not pumping enough fuel to keep up with the engine, it may need to be replaced.
What is the fuel pump and the way does it work?
The fuel pump supplies pressurized gasoline to every one of the fuel injectors during a car’s engine. The fuel pump is powered by a compact motor and is found within the vehicle’s gasoline tank. The pressure and output of the pump are controlled by a regulator. Filtration of the fuel occurs either within the fuel tank employing a pickup screen or externally with a replaceable filter mounted within the fuel supply route.
When to think about replacing the fuel pump?
A top-quality, OEM fuel pump can last indefinitely. However, like any electro-mechanical component, a fuel pump will eventually degrade and fail. If it fails to supply adequate pressure or completely quits operating, it’ll have to get replaced. This failed condition can sometimes be preceded or amid one or more of the subsequent symptoms:
The car won’t start or unexpectedly stalls and won’t re-start. A failed fuel pump may prevent a car from starting or stall it.
Check engine light is on. Sometimes a fuel pump will fail slowly, which means the fuel pressure and volume slowly degrades. the shortage of fuel may result in the engine operating without enough fuel relative to the quantity of air, causing the check engine light to appear.
Whirring noise from the fuel tank. As a fuel pump fails, you’ll notice a whirring or humming noise coming from the fuel tank area, toward the rear of the car. If the noise is from the fuel pump, failure of the pump is usually imminent and you ought to replace the fuel pump at your earliest convenience.
How to replace the fuel pump?
Removing the old pump
The typical process to remove the fuel injection pump is:
Remove the fuel injection lines.
-Remove the crankshaft pully.
-On mechanical fuel systems, remove the front cover, along with the coolant pump.
-Ensure that the number one cylinder is at the top dead center.
-Disconnect the fuel feed and return lines.
-Disconnect the wiring assemblies, such as cold start and auto shut-off.
-Loosen the locking screw on the fuel pump and rotate the spacer to allow the locking screw to tighten against the shaft of the fuel injection pump. Rotate the fuel pump gear counterclockwise, remove the backlash, and tighten the locking screw.
-Remove the nut and the washer from the shaft of the fuel injection pump. And use a suitable puller to remove the fuel injection pump gear. Do not pry the fuel injection pump gear from the shaft of the fuel injection pump.
-Remove the set screws and brackets to remove the fuel injection pump from the cylinder block.
Put identification marks on all fuel hose and tube assemblies to enable correct re-installation. Remember to plug all fuel hose and tube assemblies with suitable plastic plugs to prevent fluid loss, and prevent contaminants entering the system.
Install the new pump
The shaft of the fuel injection pump must remain locked until the timing gear has been installed and tightened onto the shaft of the fuel injection pump. Should the shaft of the fuel pump be rotated accidentally, the fuel injection pump must be returned to your Perkins distributor.
Ensure that the number one cylinder is at the top dead center on the compression stroke.
Install the new O-ring on the pump and mount the pump on the engine with the set screws.
Position the fuel injection pump gear on the end of the fuel pump shaft rotate the gear counter-clockwise to remove backlash, and tighten the locknut.
Connect the electrical harnesses and fuel feed and return lines.
Loosen the locking screw and move the space to prevent the locking screw from tightening against the shaft of the fuel injection pump.
Tighten the nut on the crankshaft timing gear.
Complete the process by installing the crankshaft cover, and pulley and installing the fuel injection lines.
Purge and get ready
When a fuel pump is removed, or fuel lines disconnected, the fuel system will need to be purged of any air. Don’t forget to replace the fuel filter as well so that your new pump runs smoothly.
