How to clean fuel injectors

“I've often wondered about clogged and or dirty injectors, I'm still driving my 2000 F250 V10 and have NEVER done this. she runs like a top.”

“Just buy new one instead of wasting the time cleaning them. They going to get dirty again in like in a month”

“Want to try this on my 2000 GMC Sierra. It’s got over 300k on the dash with original injectors”

“Man you just helped me so much more than the last 8 videos I've watched, trying to diagnose the cause of my fuel in oil issue. I'm driving a 2008 scion tc but nonetheless the info helps a ton.”

The above comment is taken from a youtube video below on how to clean the injectors. Many people want to know how to confirm whether the fuel injector is blocked, or how to clean the fuel injector.

Many people know that when a car is first used, its dynamic response and performance are very good, but as it is used more and more times or its mileage increases, the performance of the car will gradually deteriorate. Therefore, regular maintenance is particularly important. Regular maintenance will ensure that your car remains in peak condition. The fuel injection system is the core of the engine, and its state will directly affect the performance of the engine. The fuel injector is a nozzle that injects a certain amount of high-pressure fuel into the combustion chamber of the engine. Therefore, the efficiency of the injector directly determines the fuel efficiency and vehicle performance.

So how to keep the fuel injection system in peak condition? Someone just say just buy new one instead of wasing the time cleaning them. While the total charge of replacing all injectors will spend you lots of money. There is a more economical way instead of directly replacing the clogged  fuel injector with a new one. It is to clean the fuel injector regularly.

When should the injector be cleaned? Generally when your car drive every 15,000 miles, you should clean your injectors. Or you can do it less frequently with 3,000 miles or once a year. While if encountering the following situations, you may need to consider whether it is the fuel injector.

Poor power performance

Check engine light on

Lose momentum when accelerating

Noise or obvious vibration when idling

Engine overheating

Engine misfires

Engine stalls

Poor fuel mileage

Dancing Tachometer needle

You may wonder how to clean the injector? Can you do that by yourself?

The answer is absolutely yes! This is not a very complicated and difficult job. As long as you simply prepare a few things, you can easily do it yourself.

The first things to prepare are: a set of wrenches, the fuel injector cleaning kit, and the clogged fuel injectors that need to be cleaned

Then you'll need an open and ventilated area, such as a garage floor, driveway, or off-street parking space. Make sure you're working in a well-ventilated area when using cleaning solvents.

Now we prepare everything done. Let’s do this!

  1. Please consult the instructions for use of the injector cleaning kit first.
  2. Remove the cap from the injector can and fill the can with the recommended cleaning solution.
  3. Hang the can in a convenient location above the engine under the hood.
  4. Locate the fuel rail test port (consult the service manual if unsure).
  5. Using the appropriate adapter, connect the canister hose to the fuel rail test port.
  6. Locate the fuel pump relay in the fuse box (consult the service manual if unsure) and disconnect the fuel pump relay as directed.
  7. Connect the gas source to the gas port of the tank.
  8. Adjust the regulated system pressure shown on the gauge as directed (usually a few pounds below normal fuel rail operating pressure).
  9. Start the car.
  10. Wait until all the solution has flowed through the fuel rail and the tank is empty (5-10 minutes), relieve line pressure and disconnect the air supply, disconnect the hose from the fuel rail.
  11. Start the car.

This is all injector cleaning steps. Once you've done all this, you're now a professional!

As a side note, remember to add fuel stabilizing additive if your vehicle is out of the garage for long periods of time to ensure everything stays stick-free the next time you drive.

Cleaning the clogged injector is not as complicated as imagined, even if you check Google and youtube, there will be a lot of videos and tutorials to teach you how to do it, so feel free to do it boldly! By the way, please do not forget preventative maintenance. Add fuel injector cleaning into your maintenance list to avoid clogs and other problems. Most automobile manufacturers recommend you get your vehicle’s injectors cleaned every 15,000 miles. Check your automobile’s owner’s manual for your recommended mileage milestone.
